Coach the candidate before they resign to mentally prepare them and ensure they follow through without accepting counter offers.

Guidelines:

Book the call on the day or the day before they resign. Make sure you book in a call immediately after they resign to debrief how it went. Before you conduct this call make sure you have done the following:
  • Sent the candidate the Resignation Meeting tips & Template Resignation letter (https://ion-search.com/resignation-tips)
  • Asked the candidate to find and review their contract so they know what their notice period is, if their comms will be paid and any restrictive covenants
  • Got the candidate to write their handover (current job status, candidates in process etc.)

Give them feedback on what they say:
โ€ข They should sound firm, confident and like their decision is final. โœ…
โ€ข They should actually say their decision is final. โœ”๏ธ
โ€ข They donโ€™t need to go into reasons why they are leaving and they should not mention which company they are going to or any other details on the opportunity, like salary. ๐Ÿค
โ€ข Tip: Get them to pre-empt and say no to any counteroffer. ๐Ÿšซ

Example Script:

โ€œIโ€™ve made a clear and final decision to resign from my position. Iโ€™ve accepted an offer elsewhere and today officially marks the beginning of my notice period.

Iโ€™d prefer not to discuss the details of where Iโ€™m going or the package Iโ€™ve accepted, out of respect to both businesses. What Iโ€™d ask is that we focus on wrapping things up well and keeping everything positive from here. This has been a great place to start my career and Iโ€™m genuinely grateful for the support Iโ€™ve had here.

Iโ€™ve prepared a full handover document to make the transition as smooth as possible and Iโ€™m committed to working my notice period professionally and respectfully if that is what you would like.

I want to be upfront and say Iโ€™m not open to any counter offers, and Iโ€™d appreciate it if we didnโ€™t go down that road. This decision has come after careful thought and consideration, and itโ€™s based on what I believe is best for my long-term career.

I just want to end on saying thank you for everything and I wish you and the team here well for the future.โ€

WARN ABOUT TACTICS

โ€ข Sometimes companies will ask you to go away and ‘think about it’ โ€” thatโ€™s often a tactic to delay your move. Respond by saying your decision is final and your notice period starts today. ๐Ÿง 
โ€ข They might ask you to work from the office during your notice period to pressure or guilt you. Stay professional and focused. ๐Ÿข
โ€ข They may walk you off site immediately so make sure you have everything you need ready to go if you think that is likely. ๐ŸŽ’
โ€ข Do not take any property including data that belongs to the company. ๐Ÿ“
โ€ข Do not hand over any passwords for your LinkedIn profile, you own your LinkedIn profile. ๐Ÿ”
โ€ข If a counteroffer comes up, we need to talk straight away โ€” even if you donโ€™t plan to accept it. So call me the minute you leave the meeting. ๐Ÿ“ž
